Calculating Social Security Retirement Benefits

Whether or not you expect Social Security benefits to be a part of your retirement, it’s interesting to think about how much your Social Security benefits may be in the future.

The Social Security Administration makes is easy to get a quick estimate of your future benefits by offering a set of benefits calculators on the Social Security web site at www.socialsecurity.gov.

Included in the set of benefits calculators are a quick calculator, the online calculator and the detailed calculator. In this order, each of the calculators generates slightly more accurate responses than the previous because each requests more specific earnings data that the previous.

Of course, unless you have accumulated enough credits through your employment history, the calculated results will be meaningless for you. You must first qualify for social security benefits before you can receive them.

In addition to the benefits calculators, you may want to explore the free information available about obtaining a social security number, protecting your SSN, and what to do if your number is being misused by another. The last topic is covered in the article, “Identity Theft and Your Social Security Number“.
