Watch Out for Phony Email Tax Scams
The IRS reports that some have received phony e-mails that appear to come from the IRS. Warning taxpayers not to respond to emails that appear to be from the IRS, the IRS web site states, “The IRS does not use e-mail to initiate contact with taxpayers about issues related to their accounts. If a taxpayer has any doubt whether a contact from the IRS is authentic, the taxpayer should call 1-800-829-1040 to confirm it.”
In other words, if you get an email that appears to be from the IRS, it’s safe to assume it’s phony because the IRS does not use email to initiate contact with taxpayers.
