How to Install Wheatworks' Financial Calculators on Vista

The Microsoft Vista operating system looks different and is reportedly more secure out of the box.

One new aspect of Vista's security which gives some people a little problem is that it requires the permission of an Administrator account to install most software.

While IT and Computer Security folks like this, many Home-based users can find this additional level of security to be a hassle when installing software.

The following step-by-step instructions and screenshots are designed to make it easier for you to install software on a Vista-based computer.  The most important thing to know is that when you are logged on to your computer and wish to install software, you must enter the administrator password to authorize the installation.  The easiest way to do this, as you'll see in the screenshots below, is to right click on the installation executable and choose "Run As Administrator" from the popup menu. You'll be prompted for the Administrator password, and once it's entered, the installation will begin.

The screen shots below show Wheatworks' LoanSpread™ Financial Calculator as an example.  All of Wheatworks' financial calculators are installed the same way. Also, the Vista system in the screen shots is configured simply and plainly to help avoid the distractions of the pretty, Vista operating system.

Step 1 - Locate the Installation Executable on your desktop.

Notice the file, "loanspreadsetup.exe" is right below the recycle bin.

Step 2 - Right Click the Installation Executable and Choose "Run As Administrator"

Choose "Run As Administrator".

If you do not do this step, the installation will end with an error message:  Setup was unable to create the directory "C:\Program Files\LoanSpread". Error 5: Access is Denied.

Step 3 - This Will Install LoanSpread Financial Calculator

The next window you see will be:

Step 4 - User Account Control

Next, your desktop will darken and the User Account Control dialog will appear telling you a program needs your permission to continue.  This is where you enter an Administrator password.

Step 5 - Setup Continues Normally

After you enter the Administrator password requested by the User Account Control in step 4 (above), the installation of the software will continue normally.

Respond to the prompts of the installation routine as they appear and the installation will complete as it should.  If you install when you are logged on with an Administrator account, you will not need to choose "Run As Administrator" because when you are logged on as the Administrator you have all the privileges required to install software.  You only need to double-click the installation executable.
